EYFS Framework

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a Government framework that sets out minimum standards of care and learning that all childcare providers are expected to deliver. The framework aims to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to learn through high quality play to the best of their ability. Play is vital for children. It helps them to understand the world around them and to develop socially and emotionally. It’s through play that our children learn, develop at their own pace and have fun.

All children should be able to play and learn in a fun environment with adults who understand, support and care about them. We want the children we care for to feel secure, and to have the confidence to deal with whatever life brings them. They will be more prepared for their first day at school and ready to reach their potential. 

The principles which guide the work of our Early Years Professionals are grouped into four themes: 

A Unique Child

Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self assured.

Positive Relationships

Child learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.

Enabling Environment

The environment plays a key role in the supporting and extending children’s development and learning.

A Unique Child

Children develop and learn in different ways and at different times; all areas of learning and development are equally important an inter-connected.

The EYFS contains a series of “Early Learning Goals” that set out what most children are expected to achieve by the end of their reception year. These goals are grouped into areas of learning:     

           • Personal, Social and Emotional Development 

           • Communication and Language

           • Physical Development

           • Literacy

           • Mathematics

           • Understanding the World

           • Expressive Arts and Design

We recognise that learning and development are equally important and inter-connected. Our environment is carefully planned to promote the six areas of learning.

We promote children’s learning through planned activities, purposeful play, adult led and child initiated activities. All activities are carefully planned and children’s progress is closely observed, monitored and recorded at all times in order that the next steps in children’s learning can be identified and implemented.

At Little Rascals, we continually observe, listen to and assess the children in our care. This enables us to record their achievements in each of the six areas of learning and then to plan activities, experiences and provide resources that will extend each individual child’s learning and development.
